One of my fondest memories was when i moved to NYC in 2014 and didnt yet have many friends. I decided to go see sam by myself at apollo theater and remember making friends with everyone around me in line and truly feeling like a community. Then they brought mary j blige out to sing stay with me with them and i stood on my chair and belted the lyrics without a care in the world. Usually, my 22 year old self would have been self conscious but it felt like a safe community to be around everyone
